Viv Corringham is a sound artist and vocalist, originally from Britain, and now based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. From her personal bio, Corringham writes that she is interested “in exploring people’s special relationship with familiar places and how that links to an interior landscape of personal history, memory and association” (http://www.vivcorringham.org). She has been presenting her audio installations and performing musical works internationally since the early 1980s.
Corringham’s major ongoing project is entitled Shadow-walks, which has occurred in at least fifteen locations in the USA, Canada and Europe. The project commenced in 2003 and involves “walking with others, listening to the environmental sound,” in addition to the artist’s “own improvised singing” (http://vivcorringham.org/shadow-walks). Shadow-walks is influenced by Pauline Oliveros’ “Deep listening,” and attempts to focus on everyday sounds that are usually ignored or blocked out. Corringham records conversations with participants, the sounds of the environment during the walk, along with her onsite improvised signing. These recordings are then edited by the artist and the final piece comprises the “Shadow walk.”
